Key takeaways: 1) Decentralised, censorship resistant, user owned networks matter The value of crypto becomes apparent if you've been deplatformed. Most networks that businesses are built on today have the ability to deplatform their users. While this doesn't happen often, the risk cannot be overstated. Failures of centralised entities - such as FTX, Celsius, and BlockFi - are other examples of why decentralisation matters. 2) Lean into and know your circle of competence Knowing when to step into or get out of the way of your team as a founder is an important trait. If the products that you're building aren't cohesive when viewed holistically, you're likely going too wide. Cohesive products/features leverage the strengths of the team, keeps things efficient and leads to higher success rates. 3) Adopt a user centric focus not a tech centric one Users care more about the utility and value a product brings to them, than the technical intricacies of it. Ultimately, we are shipping products not ideologies. Focus on solving pressing needs and problems faced by users and market it as such. 4) Bitcoin's resistance to change acts as a immune system The Bitcoin community is one that rarely changes their mind. This has led to criticisms of the ecosystem being stagnant and the network being left behind. However, it's a feature and not a bug. It prevents the ecosystem from expanding into areas that sacrifice its core traits or increases risks of the ecosystem. 5) A chain isn't the product, its economy/ecosystem is Bitcoin layers, L2s, or any L1 in general should look at themselves as economies instead of a technical project. In the case of teams building layers on Bitcoin, focus on enabling additional utility and valuable use cases for BTC holders. Instead of selling a new technical project. You need to give users a reason to use your product. 6) Bitcoiners want yield but it needs to be transparent The failures of BlockFi and Celsius was a failure due to centralisation, not yield. There are plenty of ways for BTC to generate yield in a much safer manner. Lending, LP-ing, structured products, option strategies in DeFi or gas fees like we see on Lightning and Mezo. Teams who are building in this area need to focus on transparency and optimising for safety. 7) Economic alignment > technical alignment pre-PMF The key focus for teams building on Bitcoin today should be raising the value of BTC and gaining traction. In the early stages, teams should prioritise economic alignment over technical alignment if faced with a dilemma. For example, using Bitcoin for data availability (DA) is extremely expensive. Most Bitcoin layers don't have enough traction to generate sufficient revenue to justify using Bitcoin as a DA layer. It's acceptable to use an alternative DA layer early on, but gas fees should still be paid in BTC.

But the statistics behind this surge in popularity might surprise you. Remarkably, Ordinal activity (minting, transfers, and trades) consistently represents 50% of network transactions. For something that has only been around for 1 year, this kind of adoption is incredible. The proof is in the data: users are willing to pay for their ordinal transactions, simple as that ✅ (And the Ordinal debate can end there. If a user wants to pay for it, a miner will pick up the transaction. So long as it is within the rules of the protocol, it is fair game. But that's a conversation for another day.) Bitcoin Ordinal Activity Compared to Other Blockchains NFTs were a pretty remarkable bubble from 2021 and 2022. The fact that Ordinal inscriptions host images on-chain adds significant value for on-chain art collectooors, mitigating any risk associated with IPFS-hosted images disappearing. To put the last chart into better perspective, here is a dominance chart that shows Bitcoin's surge above 50% of NFT trading volume. We even see chains like Polygon and ImmutableX losing market share as Bitcoin pushes higher, potentially marking users are flowing from those chains to Bitcoin 🤔 Ordinals are not perfect in their current state, but Recursive Ordinals might help them get closer. Specifically, recursive ordinals might pave the way for more complex structures to be inscribed on Bitcoin’s network. They allow groups of satoshis to be strung together to support the inscription of larger files.
