Governor Chris Waller Speech Thursday night was titled “The Case For Cutting Rates.” Among the reason he laid for why he will dissent at the July 30 FOMC meeting for a rate cut is this passage. —- But other data support the idea of a slowdown in hiring. There are widespread media reports of the difficulty new college graduates are encountering in finding jobs, and, in fact, the unemployment rate for new grads is at a 10-year high, far above the level before the pandemic. —- This subject was tackled in an excellent story in Yesterday’s Financial Times, detailed by its author in the thread below. The problem with recent college graduates unemployment rates rising is all in men’s rates rising while women’s rates are falling. Men oriented occupations are slowing hiring while women oriented job hirings have been booming. If this even a problem, it is absolutely NOT something that monetary policy can address. Why did Waller bring this up? Justifying a rate cut with an emotional, non-monetary policy argument? Which begs the question, why will he dissent? She has had multiple court appearances for misdemeanors and felonies in the last two years and she’s been returned to the streets by the court system without real intervention, without real treatment — and now a beloved small business owner has been killed. Everyone must come indoors — now, not ten or twenty years from now. This is what is at stake when we don’t build enough shelter and enough treatment beds, and when we don’t require that people come indoors. As confused and vulnerable individuals, the Zizians were predisposed to fall into Rationality's rabbit hole, and they took it to extreme anarchism. They eventually believed atrocities about Yudkowsky and fought his organizations- MIRI & CFAR. Still, those two organizations, alongside LessWrong, drove them to a deep rabbit hole to begin with. The Zizians are not the first cult-like splinter group. Other members were going through "craziness spirals" over Yudkowsky's ideas. Sadly, in the Zizians' case, it ended up being deadly. Tim Cook said in 2019, "If you've built a chaos factory, you can't dodge responsibility for the chaos." I'll paraphrase: "If you've built a cult factory, you can't dodge responsibility for the cults."

I dunno if I will keep at this forever, or if i'll get hit by a burst of inspiration and motivation to do some new work endeavor as tends to happen with me — but for now, life is great I worked my ass off for a few years. 2021 to 2024 I was probably putting in an average of ~90hrs a week glued to various screens, all in on discord servers, telegram chats, twitter, etc. I got lucky (and made my own luck to an extent) and found my way into enough money that I now don't *need* to work to have a good life for myself and my family And I am just.. happy. I'm still working for a little more, and a lot of sustaining, but i'm just not really driven to add another zero to the net worth any time soon. I've shared these before, but they're another couple of stories that I love and are always on my mind when thinking about this topic and type of stuff:

The betting market has current Fed Governor Chris Waller solidly in the mix at 17% (green). On Friday, Trump said he will not consider anyone for Fed chair who supports holding rates where they are. So Waller and Bowman have a choice ... go to the wall for a rate cut in July, meaning dissent and criticize your colleagues for not cutting, or be removed from the list of those under consideration.
