But now that governments are embracing crypto, we tend to build systems that look like crypto on the surface, yet aren’t truly decentralized underneath. In our rush for adoption, we’re trading censorship resistance for compliance, sovereignty for convenience, decentralization for scalability. We’re starting to call things "crypto" that still require permission to use. The irony is brutal: permissionless technology is being replaced just as it’s becoming socially acceptable. We’re building infrastructures that may one day deny us access, and by then, it’ll be too late. In chasing sleek interfaces, mainstream adoption, and regulatory approval, we may lose the plot. What once was a movement for freedom could become a market for convenience. But comfort today might mean control tomorrow. What we call progress may turn out, in hindsight, to be the quiet undoing of everything cypherpunks fought for. And the worst part? We’ll realize it only when permission is denied.

A few takeaways from the conference: ➤ The convergence of finance and blockchain is accelerating – fast. @DeFi_Dad· 8 days agoStarting in summer 2017, I got introduced to crypto by a friend at work who was buying BTC and ETH and making a lotta money doing it. At the time, I had no money, like barely breakeven with bills, just making ends meet with a newborn. The first video I ever watched about Ethereum was this one below featuring @VitalikButerin, created in July 2014. I truthfully didn’t really get it at all at first, but the price of ETH was doing its job by going up and forcing us all to ask what the hell was being built on Ethereum. Soon after this, I started digging in more with Ethereum by reading whitepapers, getting into CT, and following whatever podcast or YouTube covered it—mainly it was @laurashin I binged through to learn whatever I could. I would rock our son to sleep every night and read about Ethereum projects like OpenLaw for making legal agreements on Ethereum, decentralized ID like uPort, prediction markets like Gnosis/Augur, and the earliest elements for what would be known as DeFi being built by teams like @0xProject, Bancor, and @KyberNetwork. In a short amount of time, I was enamored with all that could be reimagined built with Ethereum smart contracts. Trustless automation, for money applications and an infinite number of new Web3 use cases. I started hunting for jobs in Jan 2018 and as the crypto markets crashed, I actually doubled down on the idea, feeling more confident I was finding purpose in Ethereum and crypto, not just chasing the market highs of 2017. In summer 2018, I was finally hired at @Consensys, for my first full time job in crypto. I got a role as a project manager in marketing with @amandacassatt. I had previously sold consulting and advisory services for marketers so ofc I was “qualified” to do the job. Thank god she gave me a chance, whatever skills I lacked I made up for in motivation and passion to want to work for ConsenSys. I was there only 2 years, during the worst of the bear market. I am forever grateful for those 2 years. It was the biggest inflection in my life. It led to many relationships I cherish today. I found real purpose in this space. I even invested what little I had into ETH at prices a fraction of where it is today, and began a path towards real financial freedom. Most importantly, it all led me to DeFi, which is where I clearly find the most interest in crypto. Now, I never worked directly for @ethereumJoseph but one thing I always appreciated was that Joe never wavered in Ethereum’s darkest hour. When ETH was $85, he was still reinvesting into Ethereum builders and burning through serious capital to fund all of our jobs. Many of which could have been cut to preserve capital and save his own fortune. Everyone talks a big game but he has consistently shown up. And doubled-down on Ethereum over and over again. Anyways, I haven’t traveled for work in 18 months since my son was born but today I am out of the house for Ethereum’s 10th anniversary! I am in NYC to see some good friends and old colleagues and as fate would have it, I am excited to join @ethereumJoseph and a crew for bell closing at the NASDAQ. It is insane what Ethereum has accomplished over 10 years with zero downtime as the world ledger, but now we have real tailwinds behind us with DeFi adoption, exponential stablecoin growth ahead, and Wall St giants racing one another to buy up a shrinking supply of ETH. 🚀 Here’s to believing in somETHing, mfers. https://t.co/ToR3TSl9FL

Ledger upgrade: Our ledger system has served us well for six years but it’s starting to creak with our scale. The next generation of our ledger will make the app faster and unlock a number of new features. 2. Observability: With our new level of scale it's paramount that we can quickly detect and debug any issues that arise before they impact clients. We have been doing a lot of work to improve the resolution and capabilities of our system monitoring tools. 3. Next-gen custody: We’re in the process of designing the next generation of our cold storage custody system. Our custody system today is already extremely secure. The next generation is going to prepare for the next level of scale and operational flexibility as we move towards tens to hundreds of billions of $ worth of BTC under custody. 4. Security enhancements: There are always numerous security upgrades happening a River. Recent projects include improving event logging and network security upgrades to make us more resilient to DoS attacks (botnets trying to flood us with traffic to take the site down). 5. New mobile app architecture: We are working on some really cool mobile app enhancements and part of this includes upgrading the architecture of the app itself to ensure it remains performant and snappy as we add more features. 6. Risk model upgrades: We've built, and are continually improving, a proprietary machine learning model to ensure that as many people as possible can onboard to River with zero friction. The next generation of this model drastically reduces false positives and annoying account opening delays for good users and blocks scammers who waste our time so we can better serve you. 7. Client Services tooling: we are known for a high quality of service and it’s paramount that we maintain this as we grow. We are building powerful internal automations, data controls, and workflow enhancements to ensure that when you interact with our team we can answer your question or address your need as effectively and swiftly as possible while ensuring the highest level of security for your data. 8. Compliance tooling automation: compliance is a necessary function of any financial institution and we are automating as much as possible to help our team move fast to better serve our clients. 9. In a test network that was spammed with 4000 blocks/s (BPS) and limited to only 20 confirmations/s (CPS), high priority blocks always confirmed quickly while spam blocks were de-prioritized. The second big change is a new config option to limit the network wide CPS rate. If configured, a node will reduce its own vote generation rate in order to lower the network wide CPS rate. This is needed to prevent ledger bloat by spam attacks and was until now handled by setting a bandwidth limit. The effects of a bandwidth limit are hard to predict and that's why a configurable CPS limit is much simpler to work with. Changes * Active election container: Vote for blocks by cycling in round robin fashion through the buckets and ordering elections by priority. This makes sure that high priority transactions are confirmed first and that AEC de-syncs are resolved quickly too. * Added config option "cps_limit" to limit network wide CPS.
