Yeah that’s cause 20 years ago everyone thought your miniature train collecting uncle was just “quirky” and it was only diagnosed as autism if you were so severe you couldn’t function. Now we know that folks like myself, with a touch of the tism, exist and count within that diagnosis. Better understanding the full scope of ASD and associated neurodivergences means diagnosis rates change and we can better treat and support people at all ranges of the spectrum. It doesn’t mean the case factor rate has changed as can be seen by the fact that there isn’t an increase per capita in the number of severe non-verbal autistic patience than there were 20 years ago. But if data, nuance, and empathy aren’t your strong suit then you do what’s natural, you shout loudly at big scary science and blame the voodoo we call “modern medicine” for a global shadow cabal that makes frogs gay and turns every kid autistic for the sake of big pharma, right? 🙄

Yes. We’ve continually expanded and refined the definition of ASD, and became better at diagnosing it. When we first diagnosed autism, it was almost entirely restricted to non-verbal patience. In the 90s we had things like Asperger’s as a separate designation, and now it’s lumped in with ASD. In the past decade we’ve also: -Learned that adhd and autism aren’t exclusionary diagnoses and have dual diagnoses that present differently. -Better catalogued how autism presents differently in female patients. Etc. So, literally nothing in the actual population changed. We have no proof of a prevalence change, only of a reporting standard change. And that’s why data like this can get so easily abused by pseudoscientists who use it to justify causation stories with spurious data correlations.
