Pendle is quietly becoming DeFi's fixed income layer. What began as a niche yield-splitting protocol is now building a global distribution network for structured yield through what they call Citadels. For years, DeFi’s “yield” was synonymous with floating rates. Protocols like @aave and @compoundfinance remain battle-tested, but their APYs fluctuate wildly with market conditions, a feature that becomes a bug for treasury managers. As @pendle_fi fans already know, Pendle allows you to tokenize yield-bearing assets into: - PT (Principal Token): represents future principal - YT (Yield Token): represents future yield This setup then allowed institutions and treasury teams to unlock fixed income in DeFi, also enabling our team at @caladanxyz to hedge rate risk, preserve liquidity, and lock in predictable returns. How did Caladan use Pendle? - We've secured fixed yield exposure at often higher rates than TradFi offers, while dynamically allocating between floating and fixed based on forward curves. - We then use Pendle not just to speculate, but to manage interest rate risk with precision. Unlock new buyer demand for PTs and bring TradFi capital on-chain. This has two major impacts on the ecosystem: 1) LPs get paid more Post-Citadel, Pendle LPs earn: - Underlying APY - $PENDLE emissions - Swap fees from increased volume 2) YT becomes cheaper More institutions buy PTs -> YT demand softens -> YTs are now cheaper for speculators chasing leveraged yield or points Combine both together and we get a flywheel: 1) Institutions seek fixed income → buy PTs 2) LPs gain from swap flow → earn more (as mentioned above) 3) Speculators scoop cheap YTs → amplify yield 4) Treasury managers lock in fixed rates → de-risk operations Pendle becomes the clearinghouse for DeFi yield. Overall, Pendle has already crossed $15B in cumulative volume, all driven by crypto-native participants. The next $150B will be different. With Citadels, Pendle is no longer just a DeFi experiment.
